UNION – The Union Tar Heel Days celebration is scheduled Friday, July 31 through Sunday, Aug. 2, but it comes with a name and history stemming from 1,000 miles away.
A “Tar Heel,” by definition, is the nickname of someone who lived in the 18th and 19th century in North Carolina and produced turpentine, tar or pitch from pine trees. Rosin Heel or Tar Heel became nicknames for the people who worked in that profession. It later became a term of endearment for the athletic teams of North Carolina.
