Lulu May (Lue) Doering was born May 1, 1926 in rural Eldora to Charles and Mary (Schwebke) Tietz. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
Lue graduated from Owasa Consolidated School. She continued her education at business school in Marshalltown, riding the train from home. While working at the Triple A office in Iowa Falls, she met her husband, Harry. After his discharge from the Army, they were married on June 1, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, Iowa by Rev Hesse. Three children were born to this union: Peggy, Susan and Ron. They were married for 61 years and attended St John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbard where Lue taught Sunday School and presently was the oldest member of the congregation.
They farmed in the Hubbard area until 1966 when they purchased a farm south of Owasa. When Harry passed away in 2009, Lue continued her residence on the farm until the fall of 2023 when she moved to Ashbrook Assisted Living in Iowa Falls. She came to really love her family at Ashbrook but always missed her country home with her beautiful flowers and yard.
Lue was a devoted wife, mom and grandma. She loved gardening and did a lot of canning. She also loved cooking and baking and was known for her yummy cinnamon rolls, breads and sugar cookies which the grandkids loved decorating. They could always count on an ice cream cone and lots of love.
Lue helped with chores on the farm as well as fieldwork and was a bookkeeper for Harry’s painting business with their son, Ron. For many years she took lunches out to the field during planting and harvesting season. They were heartbroken when their only son, Ron, was killed in a farming accident in 1995.
Lue loved God and her family and did everything in her power to make sure the family got together for birthdays and holidays.
She was an avid sports fan, cheering for both the Cyclones and Hawkeyes.
Lue is survived by her daughters: Peggy Carlson of Waterloo, Susan (Neil) Graber of West Des Moines, and daughter-in-law Diane Kappel of Iowa Falls. Also, her grandchildren: Brandon (Wendy) Carlson of Farmington Minnesota, CJ (Davey) Doering of Iowa Falls, Brooke (John) Heuer of Waterloo, Brian (Lisa) Doering of Alden, Jodi (Heath) Bullock of West Des Moines, Kelly (Jon) Kalvig of Plainfield, Illinois, Leslie (James) Bergman of Arvada, Colorado, and Alyssa (Jake) Klaver of Kamrar. She was so proud of all her grandchildren and had a close relationship with all of them, never neglecting to send birthday cards and letters. Her great grandchildren: Jaden and Maia Carlson, Isaac and Eli Doering, Bailey, Betsy and Brady Krantz and Rubi Heuer, Zachary, Abby, Jazlyn and Hadley Doering, Dalton and Dash Bullock, Judah, Halle and Lena Kalvig, Walker, Waverly and Wren Bergman, Kane and Knox Klaver; one great-great grandchild Finch Krantz-Miller. Lue was also blessed with five step great grandchildren and two step great-great grandchildren: Gabe (Davey) and Teddy Janes, Darby (Derek) and Vance Haberl, Mabel, Grayson and Rhen Janes. Lue is survived by sisters-in-law Nancy Doering and Janet Doering, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.
Lue passed into the loving arms of Jesus on September 15 surrounded by family. She received excellent care by the loving and devoted staff at Ashbrook Assisted Living and could be heard daily praying for them as well as for her family. Her faith was of utmost importance to her, and she touched the lives of many with her unconditional love and spunky spirit.
Lue was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harry; son Ron; sons-in-law Rich Carlson and Denny Kappel; her brother Ralph Tietz; sister Norma (Virgil) Ostrem; also, her husband’s siblings: Arvene Doering, Poody Doering, Elaine (Leonard) Thompson, and Betty (Howard) Linn.
