Dennis Kielsmeier

Dennis Kielsmeier, 84, of Hubbard, passed away July 14, 2025 at the Hubbard Care Center in Hubbard.

Dennis (Denny) Lee Kielsmeier was born Sept. 1, 1940, to Louis and Gladys (Towley) Kielsmeier. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John Lutheran Church, Hubbard. Dennis attended Tipton #4 and graduated from Hubbard Community School in 1958. Dennis entered the U.S. Air Force, serving four years. He was united in marriage Oct. 19,1963 to Karen Ann Dass at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Buckeye. To this marriage two children were born: Darin Lee and Julie Ann.

Dennis initially worked at an International Resistance Company in Burlington, Iowa. He then began his US Government service as a Quality Assurance Representative for the U.S. Army at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa and was Chief of the Quality Assurance Division in 1983. He served as Supervisor over Government Transportation, Ammunition Surveillance of stored Ammunitions, and Production Scheduling and the Chief of the Quality Assurance Division before retiring in December 1995. After his retirement he continued to consult for Engineering and Management Executives of Alexandria. He was a member of the National Defense Industrial Association Iowa Illinois Chapter and was Recording Secretary and newsletter editor.

After retirement Dennis moved back to Hubbard where he and his brother farmed the family farm, and he worked for Martin Farms for 13 years. In July of 1998 Dennis earned his Private Pilot Certificate and joined the Roadrunner Flying Club in Radcliffe. He was Secretary Treasure for EAA Chapter 1324 and organized the July 4th flight breakfast at the Iowa Falls Airport for several years. Dennis served on the Hubbard City Council from 1998 to 2002. He served on the Hardin County Solid Waste Commission for four years. In 2002 he served as Mayor for the City of Hubbard until 2008. He also served as President of the Hubbard-Radcliffe Foundation, a member Hubbard American Legion Post #4, and served on various church boards.

Dennis enjoyed his grandchildren as he would take them fishing every morning, play golf in the afternoon, take a plane ride in the evening or let them dig holes with the backhoe. Routinely there were the emergency plane trips to Cabela’s for fishing supplies.

Dennis finally built his dream shop to restore Farmall tractors and continued to visit and tell stories with those who stopped by.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife Karen; son Darin (Angie) Kielsmeier, of Huntsville, Alabama; daughter Julie (Steven) Wall, of Eldridge; sister Judy Wolkow, of DeSmet, South Dakota; Larry (Becky) Kielsmeier, of Hubbard; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law Donald Wolkow.

Visitation was set for Sunday, July 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 116 S. Iowa St., Hubbard, with a funeral service Monday, July 21 at 10:30 a.m. and burial in the Hubbard Cemetery.
