Daniel Munson was born April 2, 1937 to Homer and Laura Munson in Eldora. He joined his two sisters Evelyn and Delila and later became an older brother to Howard and Roger. During his early years he grew up in Eldora, IA and graduated from Eldora High School in 1955. One of his successes in life was that in ‘53 and ‘54 he was on a State Championship Cross Country team. During his junior year of high school he was the Individual State Champion runner and was in the top 5 during his senior year for Eldora. He never bragged about it, but in our eyes, he was a legend! Dan was married to Junice Tjabring Sept. 12, 1958 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale located in Nashua. He was the proud father of four boys: Randy, Jay, John and David. Daniel moved his family to Whitten in the early 1960s and started his own business Munson Feed and Supply. He was very successful servicing all the local farmers of the area and built many lifetime friends through his business. He was the Mayor of Whitten, Justice of the Peace, a volunteer fireman, and city councilman for the town of Whitten. He was the Mayor when Denise Long and the Union Whitten basketball team won the State Championship. Overall, he was dedicated to his family, community, and his business. He supported all the sporting teams of the time. In 1982, Daniel moved to Eldora and finished out his working years at the Lawn Hill Coop in Union and later with the Beaman Coop. Daniel loved to go fishing in Canada with his fishing buddies for years. He then took his boys numerous times to enjoy the waters of Canada. He made many trips to Missouri to catch big spoonbills from the Osage River in Warsaw, MO near his brother Rodger. Dan and Junice also spent many weekends going to Guttenberg, IA to spend time on the Mississippi River boating and camping.

As his retirement years came around Dan and Junice migrated to Alamo, Texas to escape the cold winters and soakin’ the sunshine of the Rio Grande Valley near their son David who served as a teacher and coach for 34 years. They had a nice trailer in the Royal Palms Winter Texan Court. For the past 25 years they developed many friends that were very special to Dan and Junice. They enjoyed going to track meets to watch the athletes and David coach. They loved going to Jam Sessions to hear some of the Winter Texan musical talents.

Dan loved to have his yard looking spotless with lots of flowers and a huge garden for years. His health started to decline after the loss of his wife Junice in 2023. He was determined to keep going South for the winter. This last year he returned to enjoy the sun and his friends who loved him dearly. He will be dearly missed by all but was a true blessing to everyone he encountered.

Surviving members of the Munson family are his four boys; Randy (Peggy), of Ankeny; Jay (Linda), of Allen, Texas; John (UnCha), of North Pole, Arkansas, and David (Carmen), of Mission, Texas; grandchildren: Chad (Theresa) Elingson, Bradi Spurlock, Jonathon (Jennifer) Munson, Kirsten Munson, Kevin Munson, Tyler Munson, Tim Munson and Carlos Munson.; step-grandchildren Jeff (Morgan) Fuller; great-grandchildren: Isaiah Spurlock, Ebany Rae, Traevon Spurlock, Tayla Spurlock, Quinton Munson and Lane Ellingson; step-great-grandchildren: Trysten Mullis, Taylor Mullis, Wyatt Mullis, Charlie Randall, Emery Starn, Samantha Johnston, Ryne Fuller, Michael Fuller, Owen Fuller and Pheobe Rogers and great-great-grandchild Remington Spurlock.
