Was a time everyone took for granted the basic integrity of elections? You might not like the outcome, and maybe there were some suspicions about  places like Chicago or Florida – elections could be contentious and messy affairs, sometimes ugly – but when it came down to the simple tabulation of the vote, the results were guessed true.
