Tigers make improvement on gridiron

ELDORA- A step in the right direction was made by the South Hardin football team this fall, but expectations fell short.

The Tigers went from one win a year ago to three and several close calls in head coach Nick Eller’s second season.

“I’m disappointed with our record. We had opportunities to get more wins and didn’t. But the improvement we showed from year one to year two was good,” said Eller.

South Hardin’s near misses were a late 22-19 decision to perennial power Iowa City Regina on the road in district play and an 0-3 start the season. The Tigers suffered a five-point loss (19-14) to Iowa Falls-Alden along with losses of 11 and 13 points to South Hamilton (26-15) and Hampton-Dumont (25-12).

The Tigers halted an 11-game losing skid by beating Eagle Grove, 34-8 and celebrated a Homecoming win over Jesup, 34-12 in the Class 1A, District 6 opener the next week. The back-to-back wins were the first time in 87 games over 11 year.

The third win was 38-14 over East Marshall as the Tigers finished 3-6 overall and 2-3 in district play.
