Monarch tagging

Hardin County Conservation will be hosting the annual Monarch Butterfly Tagging event, at Calkins Nature Area on Wednesday, September 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Bring the family out to learn about monarch butterflies and get the opportunity to catch, tag, and release your own monarch to send it on its migration journey. There is NO preregistration for this event, it is open to all ages, and it is free.

The monarch butterfly migrates each year to the mountains and forests of Mexico where they evade our northern winters. We tag the butterflies to monitor and study how far they travel, where they start and end their journey, and the question remains how this small creature navigates to the same place every year.

Calkins Nature Area, 18835 135th St. Iowa Falls, IA 50126. We are located west of Iowa Falls, on 135th street, south of Highway D20.
