Fog-induced Highway 14 accident leaves four injured

CONRAD- A father and son from Eldora and an Altoona couple were transported to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning after a two-vehicle accident approximately eight miles northwest of Conrad on Highway 14.

Sixty-four-year old Mark Halsey of Eldora was headed north in a 2018 Toyota Highlander with his 39-year-old son Eric at about 11:00 a.m. when a southbound Honda Pilot driven by 65-year-old Dennis Wilke of Altoona collided with him in the northbound lane. A press release issued by the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office indicated that “dense fog” likely caused the crash, and Sheriff Rick Penning told The Grundy Register that Mr. Wilke was attempting to pass another southbound vehicle when he hit Mr. Halsey’s Highlander, which endured $25,000 worth of damage.
